Introduction
Chapter 13 of your textbook discussions the use of power in the workplace. There are five types of power ranging from coercive power (ability to fire/demote/transfer) to reverent power (a person's charisma based on ability/characteristics/reputation). Traditionally, organizational leadership will use various sources of power to influence behaviors in their employees. Compare that to deliberately developmental organizations, where employers are consistently taking employee's weaknesses and helping the employee recognize and overcome the fault.
In this assignment, you will compare and contrast the types of power used in traditional organizations to those in deliberately developmental organizations using the Harvard Business Review article under Unit 2 Readings and Resources.
Instructions
Write a 1-2 page paper using the following questions as your guide:
- Pick an organization to analyze. This may be the one you work for now, have previously worked for, or one that you want to research. Review their culture, including employee roles and behaviors.
- What are the similarities and differences you see between the organization you chose in 1 and the DDO's discussed in the Harvard Business Review article?
- How would you feel about working for a DDO, where your weaknesses may be exposed, but you will ultimately be growing in your own knowledge and skills?
- As a leader in an organization, what are some ways you can/could incorporate the principles of DDO's in your current or future organization?
Paper Specs
- 12 pt, Times New Roman, double spaced.
- MLA or APA style is fine, but be consistent throughout.
- Include in-text citations as well as a Work Cited or Reference sheet (not part of the overall page count).
- Include a title and subheadings for the guide questions/prompts.
Alternative Submission
- Create a 2-5 minute video addressing the guide questions/prompts in the instructions. Include a "credit" page for your references. At minimum, the video should include your voice discussing the guide questions/prompts above. It should NOT be just a running slide show.
