Corporate and Community Development with Critical Thinking

Participation Policy
Students MUST actively participate by completing an academic assignment required by the instructor by the official census date. Students who do not actively participate in an academically-related activity will be reported as never attended and dropped from the course.
Course Description (2-0)
Development of corporate and community leadership skills that incorporate critical thinking strategies. Includes data and informative decision making, group and team processes, strategic and action planning, and processes for monitoring progress. Explain leadership characteristics for encouraging and supporting business development; identify ethical and effective community leaders who value and utilize critical thinking strategies; apply communication skills and tools; use data for making effective decision; identify roles and processes used in groups and team building; and use processes for strategic planning and progress monitoring.

Student Learning Outcomes & Core Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Examine the elements and processes involved in developing a company’s strategic management plan and the processes used to monitor results and progress.
- Assess the importance of ethical behavior and social responsibility in businesses.
- Discuss historical motivational theories in management.
- Examine employee’s motivating characteristics and self-managed teams in today’s organizations.
- Examine the function of management in organizations and how goals/objections are accomplished. Explain the differences in leadership styles and their impact on employee empowerment and performance.
- Analyze company behaviors, policies, and culture that affect employee retention.
- Examine the elements that comprise critical thinking and strategies used to implement resultant conclusions.
- Develop and implement a personal improvement program for creating effective communication and decision-making skills.
- Examine successful leadership characteristics. Explain how those characteristics encourage employees and support successful business development and growth.
This is an Elective Course in the Business Management program of Midland College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.
- Critical Thinking Skills: To include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information.
- Communication Skills: To include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication.
- Personal Responsibility: To include the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.
- Social Responsibility: To include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Course Schedule
The sequence of instruction follows the course modules in Canvas. This is a WEB course. All assignments, discussions, exams, and activities will take place in Canvas.
Student Contributions, Responsibilities, and Class Policies
- Involvement with the material is essential. Students must read, take notes and ask questions.
- Students must check Canvas regularly.
- Students must prepare for online assignments in a timely manner.
- Students are expected to be able to read, write and understand standard English: the course is based on extensive amounts of material given in lecture and/or notes, audio visual aids, and assigned readings.
- It is the student’s responsibility to know exam dates and when assignments are due.
- It is also the responsibility of the student to know their progress in the course.
- Late work will be accepted with point deductions at the discretion of the instructor. If a student knows ahead of time that an assignment may be late, contact the instructor to discuss available options.
- Instructors cannot drop students with a “W.” Students must use their MyPortal account or contact their Pathways Advisor to drop a course.
- Students are expected to conduct themselves professionally and courteously in the classroom and/or the online environment.
- Students are expected to have academic integrity and to adhere to the guidelines in the Midland College Student Handbook.
- All work submitted by the student must be original works written by the student. Submissions composed by AI programs, such as ChatGPT or similar, will be considered cheating. These programs may be used as a resource to gather information like a textbook or the Learning Resource Center or for assistance with writing tips like the Language Hub.

DROPPING THE COURSE: Check the MC College Calendar for the last day to withdraw from the course and receive a “W.” Please talk to the instructor before withdrawing.
