Welcome to the Introduction of Biology

Hello! Welcome to Intro to Biology part 2 (BIOL 1409). I am so excited to work with you this semester and assist you in achieving your educational goals. I truly look forward to our class and getting to know each of you. If you have a preferred name that is not on the official roster, please send it to me via a Canvas message.  I am Dr. Poage (or Dr. P). One of the many reasons I love teaching this particular course is we get to explore ALL forms of life, from tiny, microscopic bacteria all the way to complex animals.

This course is totally online, meaning it will include lectures AND labs online.  It covers a large amount of material...essentially the history of life!!  Because there is so much information, it is not self-paced so there are study and time management considerations.  It will be important to manage your schedule to allow time daily for working on this class.

Please go through the Course Overview, About your teacher, and Learner Modules - pages to familiarize yourself with how we'll operate.

Once you go through the Course Overview page you will need to come back to this page and continue to "About Your Teacher", then "Learner Modules".  Your week 1 module is open so that you may begin the course!  As we go further into the week, week 2 material will open so that you have plenty of time to complete your work.  However, I do not want you to be overwhelmed so I will only post up to 2 weeks of material at a time.  Due dates can be found at the bottom of the syllabus page!

You'll see that you have web access to a FREE textbook!!! This etext is incorporated into the modules.  This is an etext written by college professors and provided by an organization called OpenStax.  This is an excellent text and more importantly, it keeps the cost of the course as low as possible.

Notice Statement for Online Students.  Students enrolled in online courses MUST log in and actively participate by completing academic assignments required by the instructor by the official census date. The census date is the 12th day of our semester. (February 2nd, 2022)  Students who log in but do not actively participate in an academically-related activity will be reported as Never Attended and potentially dropped from the course.  Your first assignment is to introduce yourself! So it will be any easy one.

First week of class:

  1. Click on the Course Overview image below.  Read through the information.  This will explain what the course is about. It will give you helpful information on the syllabus and grading policy.
  2. Click on About Your Teacher for my information.
  3. Click on Learner Module. Read through the course information presented in the Week 1 Module.
  4. Introduce yourself through the Discussion Board – Introduction; link is in Week 1 Module - Graded Assignment
  5. Read chapter 11, you have links in the module to video presentations of the chapter and you will be getting an assignment covering the information.

I hope that you are all looking forward to this semester.  I am!  Please contact me as soon as you have any challenges so that we can work together to meet your needs.
