With their permission, this course has been modified to meet the needs of Midland College.

Engaging in this course will help you understand civil rights issues surrounding accessibility and empower you to design learning experiences that promote inclusive learning environments. You will learn about the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility guidelines and standards.  These important aspects of accessibility will enable you to address challenges and reduce barriers faced by students related to access, success, and completion.

Over this 2 module course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize how students with disabilities often face academic barriers to access, success, and completion.
  • Articulate faculty and staff roles in reducing barriers for students with disabilities
  • With accessibility in mind, utilize the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in designing learning experiences
  • Utilize Section 508 standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 guidelines to create accessible courses
  • Determine the appropriate tools and techniques to use based on the content within a course.

You will participate in assignments, take short quizzes, watch videos, and explore relevant readings. 

Format

Each module may include:

  • Videos covering the topic
  • Readings to enhance your understanding
  • Discussions to connect to others exploring accessibility
  • Quizzes to check your understanding
  • Assignments to show your mastery of the material

Successful completion of each modules' activities and assessments is required to earn the MC Accessibility Certificate.
